Five new hospitals are among the top 20 hospitals in the country this year, according to the Discovery Health outreach.
Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal) has been on the list of 20 best hospitals for five years.
Discovery Health first released the results of a survey in 2014, filling out members of the medical funds it administers after being discharged from hospital.
The latest results are based on the forms received from 53,000 patients admitted to 202 hospitals.
Here is the list of 20 best hospitals, in alphabetical order and divided into how many years they have been on the list.
Five of the hospitals have been on the list for five years.
Last year, seven hospitals were listed for four years. The two who dropped out of the list who were on the list for four years are Mediclinic Milnerton from Cape Town and Wilmed Park Private Hospital from Klerksdorp.
The results of the poll have prompted many questions from readers in the past.
According to dr. Roshini Moodley Naidoo, head of the quality of care at Discovery Health, completed 19% of the members asked to participate last year. In comparison, 14% participated in 2014.
Naidoo says the idea with the polls is to bring about a change at hospitals. She says the 2018 results show an improvement in five of the eight categories in which the poll’s questions were divided, while the other categories showed a slight weakening.
Focus on this
The poll focuses on:
How well the nurses communicate with patients.
How well doctors communicate with patients.
Whether the hospital environment is appropriate to the needs of the patient, such as or to minimize noise.
How good pain is managed.
How clear information about the medication is shared with the patients.
How well a patient is prepared for discharge, as to whether information is given to the person as to which symptoms indicate whether a doctor should be seen again.
An overall evaluation of the hospital including whether the patient will recommend the hospital to someone again.
According to her, the survey and the revelation of the results, just as internationally, has a positive impact.
Naidoo says since 2014 the average hospital rating has improved by 19%. “It clearly shows hospitals are beginning to meet patients’ expectations of care.”
The categories most concerned about include nurses communicating with patients, information on medication and managing pain. All three categories received higher scores in 2018.
“We believe the poll has a positive impact that goes beyond hospital care. Patients who are well prepared for their hospital discharge recover better and have a lower chance of being re-admitted. This is important because repeated surveys are considered internationally as a warning sign that there is a problem with care. ”
Doctors get the highest score of all categories.
